FC Cary - Frequently Asked Questions

Question:  After I have registered my child, what do I need to do?
Answer:   We will hold a coaches meeting two weeks prior to the start of the season.  At the meeting, the coaches receive their team roster and will subsequently call their players.  Your coach will tell you the time and place for your first team meeting.
Question:  When are the practices?
Answer:   Practices for players in the U06 through U15 age group are held once a week.  The practice start time will either be at 5:30 or 6:30 and typically lasts one hour.  Practice nights for each team are scheduled prior to the coaches meeting.
Question:  How long is the season?
Answer:   The season lasts approximately ten weeks.  The fall season starts near the end of August and finishes in the beginning of November.  The spring season starts in the middle of March and finishes in the beginning of June.
Question:  What will my child need to play soccer?
Answer:   Each player is required to wear shin guards at each practice and game.  All players should bring a ball and water to each practice and game.  Most players wear cleats, but they are not required to play.  Cleats do help players perform better on the field and are recommended.  The table below lists the appropriate ball size for each age group:
U05-U08 Age Groups: Size 3 Soccer Ball
U09-U12 Age Groups: Size 4 Soccer Ball
U13-U17 Age Groups: Size 5 Soccer Ball
Question:  Why are practices and games sometimes cancelled due to rain?
Answer:   For the safety of the players and to reduce damage to the fields, we will cancel practice and/or games due to inclement weather and poor field conditions.  To find out if a the fields are open for practice and games, please visit our weather page.
Question:  I am thinking about Coaching/Assistant Coaching, are there any requirements?
Answer:   Some of our coaches are licensed and/or have played at the college and high school level.  However, most coaches are just parents who have taken an active leadership role on their children's teams because of their love of the game.  All of our coaches recognize the joys and benefits that soccer brings to children.  Requirements for coaching include a positive attitude, the ability to work with and accept players of all skill levels, and a commitment to making sure the game is enjoyable to all players.
Question:  Why do we use smaller field sizes and smaller rosters for the U05-U12 age groups?
Answer:   There are many benefits to having smaller field sizes and smaller numbers on the field:  There are more opportunities for the players to touch the ball; it encourages both dribbling and passing instead of a kicking the ball and chasing it down the field; and it aids in young players developing better individual skill due to the emphasis on controlling the ball.
Question:  Why don't we use goalies in the U05-U07 age groups?
Answer:   The objective for the players at the younger age groups is to touch the ball and develop their individual skills.
Question:  Which fields do we play on and where are they located?
Answer:   Our main soccer complex is Green Hope Elementary School and it is located at:
  2700 Louis Stephens Dr
Cary, NC 27519
We also use other fields in the Cary area when they are made available by the Town.  Directions for these will be provided when the fields are used.
